Primer on Desktop Efficiency

This is about a few tip and tricks of searching information, editing and processing documents that I learned in the last stages of my first job. MS Word1 has many features that make handling several hundred pages lot easier than possible with the most commonly used features and menus. Special keywords add a whole lot of functionality to Google searches. A concise collection of these is contained in this presentation. More elaborate explanations and some additonal points appear below.

A short ride through a laboratory thesis project

The interaction of microorganisms with pollutants has lead to the development of an exciting field of research for environmentalists. The unprecedented interest in bioremediation and its applications stems from the failure of aggressive and invasive treatment methods that disturb ecosystems by stuffing them with unnecessary quantities of chemicals.

Semester 4 (thesis research and writing)

In Semester 4 (February-June of the 2nd academic year), MESPOM students conduct their Masters thesis research projects. Theses research can be hosted by any of the four MESPOM Consortium partners and often involves internships with academic, government or industrial organizations.

See the list of the first 27 MESPOM MSc theses published in 2007. (On-line theses texts coming soon)

MESPOM theses are similar in scope and method to the ones produced in pre-cursor Masters' programmes:

My Experience in Malaysia - Part 2

WEEK 5: Native communities in Miri and the ‘New Concept’ scheme

In general, the ‘New Concept’ scheme promotes the development of land that belongs by customary rights to native communities into large-scale palm oil plantations.

My Experience in Malaysia - Part 1

For those who are curious about Borneo and its incredibly rich biodiversity or eager to know more about the ‘Dayaks’ of Sarawak, or are interested in understanding better what are the benefits and risks of biodiesel development and palm oil plantations expansion in this part of the world

MESPOM theses of 2007

The first MESPOM students (2005-2007) have submitted their Masters theses. Read about experiences of writing a thesis on biofuels production in Southeast Asia (part 1 and part 2) or about a thesis on bioremediation done in a UK laboratory.

MESPOM with work experience

Before joining MESPOM I worked for 3 years in the field of environmental engineering and management. MESPOM has helped me in several ways, not least in developing inter-personal skills and increasing knowledge. Having pre-MESPOM work experience made it easy for me to jot down the subjects of my interest from the whole bunch of exciting, interesting and challenging curricula which this course can offer.
